Thursday May 3oth – Sunday June 2nd 2024:
Film The Hunt has put together this curriculum for the serious enthusiast, to bring you an outdoor based, Field Production Course like no other. Although it is very much suitable for the beginner, it is designed to take someone from the basics to the knowledge of the Pros in only 4 days. If you are looking to take your video skills up a notch, earn a spot with an outdoor television show, or make a career change, you will find this course the perfect fit for you.
Throughout the 4 day course, you will learn everything from the basics of today’s cameras and how they operate them, to an in depth look at the dynamics of the cameras and how to use them in today’s outdoor television. We will talk about the “outdoor television industry”, how it works, how to market yourself and how to prepare for your own show if that’s what you strive for. We will go in depth on storytelling techniques, building drama, emotion and how to achieve the look of today’s popular outdoor tv shows. We will also spend a good portion of time talking “DSLR” cameras and how they may fit into your equipment list. With that, we now spend an entire day on photography as well. We will cover both the technical aspects of shooting good photos, as well as the creative, as it has become such a large part of todays media distribution.
Hands on training is a HUGE part of this and all of The Film The Hunt Courses. You will spend a good amount of your time here in the field, learning how to create those eye appealing shots and in turn, making your productions more entertaining.
As with all of our courses offered here at Film The Hunt, we pride ourselves on the personal attention you get throughout your entire stay with us. We not only keep our classroom to a size that allows us to do that, but our instructors often stay late each night to make sure your questions are answered and so that you get more out of it than you bargained for. Growing up I always dreamed of working in the outdoor industry. I began guiding hunts straight out of high school but soon realized seasonal work wouldn’t feed my desire. After talking to a few people I was pointed in the direction of filming hunts and had no clue why I didn’t think of that earlier. I began doing research and got ahold of Tom with ‘Film The Hunt’. After our first phone conversation my enthusiasm sky rocketed. I could tell he genuinely cared about making this dream of mine true. I immediately signed up for a local 1 day course, with intentions of taking the 4 day production course.
A month later I attended the 1 day course only knowing how to turn on a very basic camera and hitting record. I sat down in my seat with a pen and notebook in hand eager to learn. I soon became overwhelmed with these fancy terms such as ISO/Gain/Shutter speed but every question I had was answered with full understanding. 8 hours later and multiple pages of notes the course was finished. I immediately gave Tom my deposit for the 4 day production course.
After months of work I was able to afford a high end camera which tom had recommended. I sat anxiously waiting for it to arrive the day I was due to leave for Ohio to start the course. When it finally arrived I threw the box in my truck and hit the road. I arrived with my camera, lens, and accessories still in the box. Having it in my hand for 4 hours Tom was able to teach me every setting on it and by the end of the first day I was able to run it at its full function. The next 3 days were packed full of hands on, in the field practice. From hunting scenarios to double tree stand set ups. We even had a guest appearance from Cragg Fitz of ‘Trained Assassins’ who taught us how to market ourselves which I personally thought was priceless.
I walked out of the doors of ‘Deerassic Park’ feeling confident, ready to put the skills I learned to work. I filmed tons of footage over the summer months and was ready to edit it all together into a video. I got ahold of Tom and he invited me out to fill one of the last spots of the editing course and I jumped on the opportunity. Never using Adobe Premiere I knew I had to gain some knowledge on it. With my basic laptop in hand and a hard drive full of footage I sat down for the editing course. Once again an abundance of knowledge was taught, without a single question unanswered and I completed my first outdoor production.
Continuing to put all the knowledge to work I was able to land an internship with one of the bigger names in the Outdoor industry. If you’re passionate about the outdoors and want to make a living filming hunts, look no further. Tom and Nick have been mentors from the beginning of this journey I’m on. If I could change anything about the whole experience it would be to have taken the course sooner. They’ll help you make a living doing what you love.
